Public consultation on the draft Energy Storage Strategy
The Strategic Framework for Energy and Climate lays the foundations for the modernisation of the Spanish economy, job creation, Spain’s leading position in the clean energies and technologies that will dominate the next decade, the development of the rural environment, the improvement of people’s health and the environment, and social justice.
The Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 (PNIEC) is one of its fundamental tools and for its complete materialisation requires specific strategies to correctly identify the challenges and opportunities and to design the most appropriate measures in key technologies and vectors for the achievement of the energy and climate objectives, as well as to take advantage of the opportunities for the generation of economic activity, employment and competitive industrial development that the energy transition may entail.
Among other aspects, the PNIEC foresees the development of storage as one of the key tools for giving flexibility to the electricity system in order to support significant growth in renewable generation, as well as contributing to the management of electricity networks, the participation of citizens in the change of energy model and greater competition and integration in the electricity market.
The “Energy Storage Strategy” deals with the technical analysis of the different technologies and solutions for energy storage, the diagnosis of the current challenges facing their deployment, the analysis of their value chain to establish the necessary tools to strengthen the competitiveness of the national industry, the lines of action to advance in the fulfilment of the foreseen objectives and the opportunities that storage represents for the energy system and for the country.
